Domain names

When setting up a website choosing a good domain name is important. This is because if you choose a domain name that is easy to rememeber users are more likely to visit again, also if your domain name is relevant to your website people will rememeber it easier.

When you setup your website you often pay for hosting and domain names together, although it is possible to have a domain name that you can own and sell etc many webmasters buy domain names and never use them for websites and sell them on for a higher price. There are many forums and websites that specialise in selling domain names.

The most common domains are .com, .co.uk, .net, .org

How to get more traffic to your website

One of the most effective ways to get more traffic to your website is by exhanging your website link with other related websites. This is because the more websites that link to your website the higher your page ranking will be in search engine results. When the search engine spiders scan through websites they will pick up your links that are on other websites which gives you a higher page rank.

You can exhange your links with other websites by contacting the webmaster and agree to exchange links, although once you have done this the other webmaster can take your link off their site and you won't know (unless you check).

Another way you can get your link on other websites is by answering forum posts and have your website as your signature, this will encourage other forum users to visit your website.

You can also submit your website link to popular search engines such as google, yahoo etc if your link is approved then your website should appear in search results quite soon after submitting it.

Have you got Spyware on your computer?

Spyware does not just work when you are connected to the Internet, which is why your computer is running slow even when your not connected. If you downloaded Spyware and Adaware free it is unlikley they will be able to pick up all spyware and bugs, although they do find some! I used to use them too but my computer would still freeze for ages and the fan kept working overtime! (the wiring noise your computer is making) even though adaware said there were no bugs. Then I got Zone Alarm and it found bugs that the others did not pick up and I have never had a problem with my computer since.Things you could try:

1) Get a firewall such as Zone Alarm, and run a spyware and virus scan.
2) If your computer is still going slow once you have tried the above, maybe you should consider backing up all your files on your computer on CD's and re formatting your computer (delete everything and re install Windows) This will definatly get rid of any spyware, but it takes a long time and you have to re install everything again.

Which browser is better? Explorer or Firefox?

Some browsers are better than others, but for Internet Explorer and Firefox it wouln't make any difference when you are browsing the net because they can both do all of the same things, and websites will always look the same in both of them. Some people prefer using firefox and some prefer using Internet Explorer so just set the one you like best to the defualt :-) OR you could try going into tools and then Internet options and switch off the default browser question.

Everyone has their own preference for which browser they like using as their default. However, explorer is the most popular because it is the default browser installed with windows and it does everything most people want. However, most webmasters prefer using Firefox. If you are setting up a website you should always test your pages in both browsers to ensure the pages are formatted the same when using both browsers.

How to setup a website

If you just want to advertise your services and allow lots of people to contact you through your webiste etc you will probably need a basic website and not alot of space. You can either have a basic (free website) from hositing such as Geocities which give you a basic website. But with this type of hosting you cannot choose your website name. Or you can pay for hosting from streamline.net, fasthosts etc (There are lots of them)

Once you have a website you will then need to think about how to advertise your website, and how you will get people to visit your website and hopefully use your services. But to get a website follow these steps:First you need to get some hosting, for example fasthost, streamline.net, geocities all provide hosting for websites.

If you sign up with one of these you will prob pay a subscription fee. (geocities also provide free webspace) When you sign up for hosting you will prob also get to choose your website name (domain name) for example www.yourwebsitename.co.ukThen you need an FTP program (for example smart ftp) which is what you use to get your website files (pages) onto your webspace. You should also learn how to create webpages, you will probably use HTML, PHP, ASP, SQL etc (you can also find template web pages which you can change there are lots of them). The steps you need to follow are as follows:

1) Find good hosting, (cheap, lets you do what you want on your website)
2) Sign up, choose your website name
3) get an FTP program
4) Make webpages
5) Upload them using FTP program
6) Check your website and the files you created should be there.
